Huánuco Carnival
This festival is celebrated especially in February, but there are various events within this celebration, one of which is the election of the “Miss Carnival.” This election takes place approximately three days after the first presentation of the candidates.
Other cultural celebrations and events include musical performances, such as the Huánuco folk music concerts, and exhibitions held in the main square of Huánuco, along with national and international concerts.
Carnival Events
Another event is the parade of “His Majesty Don Calixto,” which represents the carnival spirit of Huánuco. There is a story about this character from the time of President Pardo, when he decided to prohibit the carnival from lasting more than one day. It is said that Don Calixto wrote a letter to Pardo, which was published in the newspaper “La Defensa,” complaining about the president’s decision. Since then, the people of Huánuco have valued Don Calixto’s spirit for defending the traditions of the town.
Customs and History
Another event is the reading of some letters attributed to this fictional character. The celebrations in honor of Don Calixto last four days, and on the fifth day, his “wake” takes place. This is one of the funniest parts of the entire carnival, as the townspeople have everything ready: the coffin, the place for the wake, and “Doña Pimienta” begins to weep and faint from grief. Then, more widows arrive, and it is revealed that Don Calixto was a womanizer, which elicits laughter from the crowd.
And, as is customary, there are the amazing water fights of the carnival, with water, talcum powder, and paint. Don’t forget the traditional “yunza” party, and also the “comadres and compadres” party a few days before.
