Is there a departure tax at Peruvian airports?
Is there a departure tax at Peruvian airports?
Not currently. You no longer have to pay the departure tax in person at airports in Peru, whether for domestic or international flights. This amount is now included in the ticket price, so you do not have to pay anything to board or leave the country.
The “exit fee” and the reasons for its confusion
Over the years, passengers departing from Peru to an international airport, for example, Jorge Chávez International Airport (Lima), had to pay a so-called “boarding fee” or “departure fee” in cash at the airport itself at the time of boarding.
This payment was a mandatory tax levied by the airport authorities to finance the operation, maintenance, and improvement of services.
Over time, this physical payment has been eliminated, but the term “departure tax” is still used colloquially, often confusing travelers today.
However, this tax still exists, although it is now automatically included in the price of the airline ticket, meaning that it is not necessary to pay this tax while at the airport.
The current validity of the “departure tax”
Yes, but it is no longer necessary to pay it directly at the airport. The Unified Airport Use Fee (TUUA) – the TUA or Airport Tax that still exists – is automatically charged when purchasing a ticket, whether online, through an agency, or directly from the airline.
Approximate fees at Jorge Chávez Airport (Lima): Domestic flights: between US$10 and US$12
International flights: between US$28 and US$31
Fees are regulated by OSITRAN (the regulatory body that oversees Peru’s transport infrastructure) and are always included in the final ticket price.
You can check this yourself with the names that will appear on your e-ticket: “TUA,” “TUUA,” “Airport Tax,” or “Airport Service Charge.”

🇲🇽 Information for Mexican travelers
Mexicans leaving the country are not subject to special fees; the rates are the same for all passengers. There are no departure taxes at the borders of Bolivia, Ecuador, or Chile; there are only immigration controls. No visa is required to enter Peru with a valid Mexican passport. It is recommended that you only carry the necessary cash, verify on your ticket that the fare allows you to leave the country, and contact the airline if you have any questions about the fare.
