Itinerario

MANU 5D EXPEDITION

1

           DAY 1. – Cusco (3,300 m.a.s.l.) – Andes- (3650 m.a.s.l.) Cloud Forest (1,400 m.a.s.l.)

Start of our 5d manu expedition. The first day of our adventure begins with an early departure from Cusco in our vehicles, crossing inter-Andean valleys and peasant communities. We will visit Paucartambo, a charming colonial town, and its fascinating museum. Afterwards, we will make a brief stop in Acjanacco to have lunch and contemplate the panoramic view of the jungle from the puna. We will continue to the Cloud Forest, known for its richness in endemic species such as the Spectacled Bear and the Cock of the Rock, as well as a variety of flora such as orchids, bromeliads and ferns. Finally, we will head to the Orquídeas de San Pedro lodge for the night.

   DAY 2.- Cloud Forest – Erika Lodge (600m.a.s.l.)

At dawn, we will go in search of the fascinating Cock of the Rock, Peru’s national bird, to witness its unique courtship ritual. After breakfast, we will head to the village of Pilcopata and then to the port of Atalaya, from where we will begin an exciting boat ride down the Alto Madre de Dios River to our private reserve “Erika”. In the afternoon, we will explore trails, admire the imposing Ceiba tree and go on a night walk to observe the nocturnal life of the jungle. In addition, we offer the free option of canoeing on the Koñeq and Alto Madre de Dios rivers, enjoying the scenery and refreshing waters.

       DAY 3. – Erika Lodge

At dawn, we navigate to the Collpa, a clay wall on the Alto Madre de Dios River, where parrots such as the blue-headed and the white-eyed parakeet come to supplement their diet with minerals. After this activity, we return to the Erika Lodge for breakfast. Then, we visit Machuwasi Lake by catamaran, spotting various birds such as the hoatzin, camungos, cardinals and herons. During a walk, we can see monkeys, capybaras and snakes. Optionally, a night walk allows us to look for toads, reptiles and mammals such as monkeys and tapirs.

        DAY 4.- Erika Lodge – Aguas Calientes – Erika Lodge

After breakfast, we board our boat for a fascinating 3-hour trip down the Alto Madre de Dios River to the hot springs of Shintuya, surrounded by lush Amazonian forest. Once there, we will walk along a trail for approximately 3 hours (round trip) until we reach some impressive waterfalls, where we will be able to admire the diversity of flora and fauna of the lowland jungle. Afterwards, we will relax in the hot springs before returning to Erika Lodge, where we will spend our last night in the embrace of this magical Amazon rainforest.

         DAY 5.- Erika Lodge – Cusco

After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we pack up and head by boat back to the port of Atalaya. There, our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. On the way, we will make a brief stop at the Mirador Pico de Hoz, a hummingbird garden and environmental conservation center, where we will be able to observe and photograph a great variety of birds. We will enjoy lunch en route and arrive early afternoon in Cusco.

How to get to Manu National Park?

100% recommended is to take a transport to Atalaya, located in front of the Madre de Dios River and from where you can hire boat rides and hikes in the middle of the jungle. You can get to Atalaya from Pilcopata in a shared cab (10 soles per person) or in a private moto-taxi (60 soles).
