¿Where to see condors in the Colca?

The Colca Valley , in the heart of Arequipa , is one of those places where nature displays its full grandeur. Among ancient terraces, deep ravines, and watchful volcanoes, a spectacle unfolds that attracts travelers from all over the world: the majestic flight of the Andean condor . Watching these enormous birds soar above the canyon is one of the most memorable experiences Peru has to offer. But where is the best spot to see them? What time do they appear? In this guide, we’ll tell you where and how to experience this unforgettable encounter with the guardians of the Colca , so you can make the most of your visit.

Cruz del Cóndor Viewpoint (The Main One)

  • Located between Cabanaconde and Chivay, this is the spot with the highest concentration of condor flight activity . It features railings, platforms, and areas for photography. While it tends to be more crowded, it’s where condors are observed almost daily .

Best time of year

  • April to November – Dry season (best time)

During these months, the Colca Valley experiences its most climatically stable period.

Clear skies for most of the day. Better thermals : the sun quickly heats the canyon walls, creating columns of warm air that condors use to soar effortlessly. This allows for longer, higher, and more consistent flights , ideal for photography and observation. In addition, there is less chance of rain interfering with visibility or access to the viewpoints.

In short: if you want to maximize your chances of seeing them, this is the perfect season.

  • December to March – Rainy season (they can still be seen)

Although the weather is more variable, condors continue to fly every day , as their habits do not change seasonally. However:

There is increased fog , especially early in the morning, which can reduce visibility. Intermittent rain may cause delays or partial closures on some sections of the road. Even so, when the clouds part, condors often appear, taking advantage of the midday heat.

This time of year offers greener landscapes, fewer tourists and a more peaceful atmosphere, but with a bit more unpredictability.

Other recommended viewpoints for seeing condors in the Colca Canyon

Although Cruz del Cóndor is the most popular viewpoint, the Colca Valley boasts other vantage points that offer unique perspectives and more tranquil settings. Many travelers prefer these spots to enjoy the condors’ flight without the large crowds.

Cruz de San Miguel Viewpoint

Located just minutes from Cabanaconde , this viewpoint is an excellent alternative if you are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.

  • The height and orientation of the viewpoint allow you to observe how the condors emerge from their nests on the canyon walls.

  • It’s ideal to arrive very early in the morning , before the tourists start to fill the area.

  • Perfect for those who value tranquility and want to experience a more intimate moment with nature.

Achachihua Viewpoint

This viewpoint stands out for offering one of the deepest views of the canyon .

  • From here you can get impressive panoramic views of the flight of the condors, which usually move to different heights depending on the temperature of the day.

  • It is a spot highly valued by photographers, as it allows them to capture the bird framed by the enormous walls of the Colca.

  • Furthermore, it is less crowded, allowing you to enjoy the scenery more peacefully.

Tapay Viewpoint

With a direct view towards the picturesque village of Tapay , this viewpoint is very popular with travelers trekking in the area.

  • It is located near trails that connect to various points in the canyon.

  • It is an excellent place to rest and watch the condors fly while enjoying a complete panoramic view of the valley and its settlements.

  • Recommended for those looking to combine nature, hiking and local culture.

El Cura Viewpoint

Less known and away from the traditional tourist circuit, Mirador del Cura is a hidden gem of the Colca.

  • It offers excellent views of the valley and allows you to spot condors flying over less populated areas.
  • Being quieter and less crowded, wildlife tends to approach more naturally.
  • Ideal for those seeking an alternative viewpoint or uninterrupted nature photography.

Best time to see condors in the Colca

Andean condors rely on the sun’s heat to generate thermal currents that allow them to rise effortlessly. That’s why timing is key to increasing your chances of spotting them.

Best time of day

  • Between 7:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
During these hours, the sun begins to warm the canyon walls, and the condors leave their nests to glide, sometimes passing just a few meters from the viewpoints.

Less reliable option, but possible

  • Between 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
On some days, especially sunny ones, the afternoon thermals also allow for interesting flights, although activity is usually lower than in the morning.

Why does heat matter?

The greater the solar radiation the canyon receives, the more the rocky walls and valley floor heat up. This uneven heating generates ascending thermal currents: the hot air rises, creating “columns” of air that act as natural elevators.

Condors, which are soaring birds and rely almost entirely on these thermals to gain altitude (because their huge wings require a lot of energy to flap), take advantage of these currents to rise effortlessly. That’s why:

  • Mid-morning, when the sun has already sufficiently warmed the canyon, the currents are stronger.

  • Condor activity increases significantly, as they leave their roosts to ascend, move to other parts of the valley, or search for food.

For visitors, this means a higher chance of seeing them fly nearby, often very close to the viewpoint, gliding just above or at eye level.

In summary: more sun → warmer air → stronger thermals → more visible condors in flight.

How to get there

From Arequipa

Time: 3.5 to 4 hours to Chivay, and another 1.5 hours to Cruz del Cóndor.

Options:

  • Full-day tour (most common)
  • Bus to Cabanaconde + short walk to the viewpoint.
  • Own car (mostly paved road).

From Cabanaconde

  • Taxis or motorbikes will take you there in 15–20 minutes .

Practical tips

  • Bring warm clothes : the mornings are cold.

  • Wear sunscreen and a hat .

  • Lenses or cameras with zoom greatly improve the experience.

  • Be patient: sometimes they go from one to several in just a few minutes.

  • Keep quiet: noise scares away condors and affects wildlife.

Interesting information about condors

  • They are one of the largest flying birds in the world (up to 3.3 m wingspan).

  • They can live for more than 70 years .

  • In the Colca Valley there is one of the most important colonies in Peru .

  • They fly at over 5,000 meters above sea level , taking advantage of the canyon currents.
