¿How to get to Uyuni from Lima?

HOW TO GET TO UYUNI FROM LIMA

If our destination is Uyuni and we are in the city of Lima, we have several travel options to choose from:

BUS TRAVEL:

If we’re traveling to Uyuni from Lima by bus, the first thing we need to consider is time, as the entire trip from Lima to Desaguadero takes 24-26 hours.

The first step is to head to the Civa bus terminal. We’ll begin our journey, and upon arriving in Desaguadero, we’ll have to go through immigration, as this is the Peru-Bolivia border.

Next, we’ll take a bus to La Paz from Desaguadero (T.Boliviano). Costs may vary, but the fare is 20 Bolivianos (3.00 USD).

We purchased our next bus ticket at the La Paz bus terminal on Av. Perú. CHULLOS TRAVEL recommends traveling at night to arrive at your destination very early in the morning and make the most of your time.

ARRIVAL IN PEACE

Upon arriving in La Paz from the Peruvian capital, we can continue our adventure to Uyuni by taking a LA PAZ-UYUNI bus.

These buses depart at night, and we can find different schedules, ranging from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. This means that night trips are our only option when it comes to bus travel.
It’s important to emphasize that you must purchase a “terminal pass” before boarding the bus, which costs Bs 2.5 per person.

There are two routes, and travel times last approximately nine to twelve hours.

The cost of these bus tickets varies according to the comfort of the bus and prices range from 65 to 197 Bolivianos. If we depart at 9:00 PM, we arrive very early in the morning at 7:00 AM.

It is recommended to take the necessary precautions since the altitude is much higher and the cold is scorching, but this is only the beginning of this journey. Let’s have a coca tea to acclimatize and continue with the adventure.

PLANE TRAVEL:

If you decide to use this method to get to Uyuni from Lima, there are two flights departing from Lima to La Paz. The flights depart from Sunday to Saturday.

Latam 2401 schedule: 4:25 PM – 5:30 PM

Avianca 7321 schedule: 7:56 PM – 9:05 PM

Upon arriving in La Paz, we take a night bus, as in the previous revised route. The trip takes approximately 9 hours (LA PAZ-UYUNI bus).

THINGS WE CAN SEE // DO IN THE SALAR DE UYUNI:

Visit the train cemetery.
We’ll see salt hotels, salt houses, and a sea of salt all around us.

The flags and the Dakar Rally monument.
Reflections of the sunset on the salt flats.

How much do tickets cost and what are the additional costs on a UYUNI tour?

You must bring extra cash for expenses not included in the excursion:
Entrance to the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve: 150 bolivianos
Access to the hot springs: 6 bolivianos
Hot showers at the accommodations: 10–15 bolivianos depending on the location
Entrance to Incahuasi Island: 30 bolivianos

Best time to visit the Uyuni salt flats

If you want to see the dry salt flat, late spring is a good time. It also allows you to enjoy perspective, with pleasant temperatures during the day and not too cold at night.
Summer is the rainy season, and the salt flat is covered with water, allowing you to take beautiful photos using the plateau as a mirror.
If you’re looking for a balance or harmony between the two seasons, it’s best to visit this beautiful place in autumn, as it’s much cooler at night, but the dry part of the salt flat is still visible, and some areas still have traces of water, allowing you to observe the reflections.
