Lachay Hills

Lomas de Lachay National Reserve
A natural gem just 2 hours from Lima
The Lomas de Lachay National Reserve is located approximately 105 km north of the city of Lima, in the province of Huaura. This unique place preserves the ecosystem of “coastal hills”: green hills that emerge thanks to the moisture from the marine fog (garúa) in the middle of the Peruvian coastal desert.

Roots and Geography
Established on June 21, 1977, the reserve encompasses approximately 5,070 hectares. Its altitude ranges from 100 to 750 meters above sea level, offering a unique nature experience unlike the typical Peruvian rainforest or mountains.
Routes, Visits, and Best Times
- The best time to visit is from June to October, when the hills are covered in green and species native to the mist bloom.
- The reserve offers marked trails such as the Zorro Circuit, the Tara Circuit, and the Perdiz Circuit, allowing for safe exploration of the area.
- It is recommended to leave Lima early (between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m.) to take full advantage of the daylight and tranquility, and to avoid any delays.

Unique Flora and Fauna
In the heart of the coastal desert, this ecosystem is transformed by the drizzle: verdant hills, mosses, endemic plants, birds, and small, adapted mammals emerge. It’s a perfect setting for nature photography, quiet contemplation, and disconnecting from the world.

Tips for your visit
- Wear comfortable shoes, a hat, and a light jacket: the fog and wind can be unexpected.
- Stay on marked trails: the ecosystem is fragile.
- Camping is not permitted in all areas: check beforehand.
- You can combine your visit with a walk or a nearby beach: the coastal desert of Lima is breathtaking when it transforms into a sea of green.
Why visit?
It’s an easily accessible destination from Lima that offers unique nature, tranquility, fresh air, and an almost surreal environment: verdant hills emerging from the aridity thanks to the coastal fog. Ideal if you’re looking for a short and authentic getaway.
