Is Puno better on the route Cusco → Puno → La Paz (Bolivia) or the other way around?

When planning a trip through southern Peru and Bolivia, deciding on the order of your route is crucial. The sequence Cusco → Puno → La Paz , or vice versa, not only affects transportation but also altitude acclimatization , logistics , and the overall tourist experience . Both routes have advantages and disadvantages that should be considered before booking buses, trains, or flights.

  Key factors to consider

  Altitude and acclimatization

Cusco: 3,399 m above sea level. Many travelers may experience altitude sickness during the first few days.

Puno: 3,830 m above sea level, higher than Cusco. If you go directly from  sea level, acclimatization can be more difficult.

La Paz: 3,650 m in the city center; some tours go up to 4,000 m more .

Tip: Arriving in Cusco first allows you to gradually acclimatize to the altitude before going to Puno and La Paz.

  Transportation and connections

  Cusco → Puno:

Approximate distance: 386 km (~7–10 hours by bus).

Options: tourist buses, night buses or tourist train ( PeruRail ).

  Puno → La Paz:

Approximate distance: 389 km (~6–8 hours).

Transportation: Tourist buses with border crossings at Desaguadero, Copacabana or Kasani.

  La Paz → Puno:

Similar to the previous one, but it involves traveling from Bolivia to Peru , which may require more time for migration and document stamping.

Tip  : The Cusco → Puno → La Paz routeis usually smoother in terms of transport, because most tourist buses operate in that direction.

  Tourist Experience

  Cusco firts:

You can explore the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and acclimate.

Then go to Puno and visit Lake Titicaca, the floating Uros Islands, Taquile, or Amantani.

Finish in La Paz, where the altitude will be less impactful if you are already acclimated from Cusco and Puno.

  La Paz first:

Allows you to visit Bolivia first, then cross into Peru.

It can be more challenging if you come from lower-altitude areas, as altitude sickness may appear immediately.

It can also be a problem if you want to visit Machu Picchu afterward, since returning to Cusco requires more transportation and planning.

  Borders and documentation

  Crossing Perú ↔ Bolivia

  A valid passport is required.

Tourist buses handle immigration procedures, but some crossings from La Paz → Puno may take longer.

From Cusco → Puno → La Paz, the crossing is usually more organized due to the popularity of the tourist route.

  Season and climate

May to October: dry season, ideal for both countries.

November to April: rainy season; roads in Puno and the Altiplano can be more challenging.

The route Cusco → Puno → La Paz allows you to make the most of the weather conditions, visiting Machu Picchu first and Lake Titicaca afterward.

  Comparative advantages and disadvantages

Route Advantages Disadvantages
Cusco → Puno → La Paz

Better altitude acclimatization, more organized transportation, gradual experience, lower risk of altitude sickness

Requires more days if Machu Picchu is included

La Paz → Puno → Cusco

Ideal if your international flight arrives in La Paz; the reverse route may be less tourist-friendly

Higher risk of altitude sickness, less smooth transportation, more border procedures

Best option: Cusco → Puno → La Paz

Allows you to gradually acclimatize to the altitude.

Optimizes transportation and tourist bus connections.
