“Yura: The Hidden Thermal Paradise in Arequipa”

The Yura Hot Springs , located just minutes from the city of Arequipa , are one of the most iconic natural havens in southern Peru. Nestled among reddish mountains and a tranquil setting crisscrossed by streams, these baths offer warm, mineral-rich waters that spring directly from the heart of the Chachani volcano, giving them their characteristic heat and mineral concentration. Since pre-Hispanic times, their springs have been valued for their relaxing and therapeutic properties, making them a perfect destination for those seeking rest, well-being, and a connection with nature. Visiting Yura is to immerse oneself in a unique experience that combines tradition, health, and the majestic Arequipa landscape.

Properties of thermal water

They are traditionally attributed with benefits such as:

(These are traditional benefits; they do not replace medical treatment.)

Natural environment

The baths are surrounded by a typical Arequipa landscape:

The weather is usually mild during the day and cold at night , so many visitors enjoy the contrast between the warm water and the cool air.

A little bit of its history and tradition

The baths have been used since pre-Hispanic times. Some nearby areas show vestiges of ancient use, as many cultures valued the hot springs for their connection to health and spirituality. Over the centuries, local communities continued to preserve and use these springs for rest and traditional rituals. It is mentioned that the Yura hot springs—or at least the Yura valley/area—were used since pre-Hispanic times (during the time of the ancient Inca Empire), taking advantage of the natural springs in the area, which are part of the history of the White City.

Bathroom areas and types

It’s an interesting well, one of the most highly recommended to visit, as it contains properties that improve the nervous system and strengthen muscles and bones. This site was built by  Edmundo Escomel , who has studied the properties of the greenish water in this area, which ranges from 22°C to 28°C.

This is the  oldest well  on the Yura Hot Springs tour,  created in 1824  by the Spaniard José Nodar y Nogueral. It  features five small wells  known as El Tigre, Unión de Agua, Vegeto, Tigrillo, and Sepultura, which are available for your use due to their renowned healing properties and temperatures that can reach up to 32°C.

It is the  second oldest  among the others, it bears that name in honor of the  German researcher Tadeo Haenke , it has sulphurous-alkaline waters and presents a larger and more comfortable space.

It has ferruginous waters with temperatures between 20°C and 28°C, and two pools with properties that relieve muscle pain and strengthen the body. However, these waters are also contraindicated for people with diabetes and anemia.

Yura offers you another spectacular destination, this is the  Quiscos Spa , which presents a beautiful landscape, a destination that welcomes us with a waterfall and upon arriving at the meeting point you will enjoy its  waters in the open air.

It’s a thermal bath that will relax your body and mind, a spacious place you can enjoy with friends or family. You’ll have the option of setting up a grill, playing recreational or sporting games while appreciating the surrounding nature. Also, just steps from the spa, you can visit a local waterfall.
