Summary

Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountain | General Information

>>

Montaña Arcoíris, Vinicunca

  • Rainbow Mountain was once completely covered in snow. Its spectacular range of natural colors only became visible after the recent melting of glaciers around 2013, revealing its unique beauty to the world during the mid-2010s.
Location and Access
  • Rainbow Mountain is located in the Peruvian Andes at over 5,200 meters above sea level, in the Cusco region, between the provinces of Quispicanchi (Cusipata district) and Canchis (Pitumarca district), within the Vilcanota mountain range.
Altitude and Geology
  • The mountain reaches an elevation of approximately 5,200 meters above sea level, with nearby viewpoints ranging between 5,020 and 5,036 meters.
Climate and Best Season to Visit
  • The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to September or October, when the trails are firmer and the views are clearer. During the rainy and snowy season, from November to April, the colors appear less vibrant and trail conditions can become more difficult.
  • Temperatures can range from –5 °C (23 °F) at dawn to around 10 °C or 12 °C (50–54 °F) during the daytime. The sun is intense at high altitude, and strong winds are common.
Main Routes and Itineraries
Pitumarca Route
    • This route takes approximately 3 hours by vehicle from Cusco, followed by a steep and physically demanding 1.5-kilometer hike that usually takes between 1 and 1.5 hours. It is recommended for its accessibility and direct panoramic views.
Cusipata Route
    • This option involves a longer hike of approximately 3 kilometers and is generally less crowded. It is ideal for travelers seeking closer interaction with local communities and quieter Andean landscapes.

The 7 Colors Mountain in ATV | Full Day, also known as the Vinicunca Tour, is one of the most impressive natural attractions in Peru. Located at more than 5,200 meters (17,060 feet) above sea level in the district of Cusipata, this geological wonder amazes visitors with its vibrant colors created by the oxidation of minerals on its surface.

Since its discovery by international tourism in 2016, Rainbow Mountain has become one of Peru’s most popular travel destinations, comparable to Machu Picchu and attracting visitors from all over the world.

The Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour is an excellent alternative for travelers looking for both adventure and comfort. Before starting the experience, participants receive a short safety briefing and ATV riding instructions. The journey then becomes an unforgettable ride through breathtaking Andean landscapes, with spectacular views of the Ausangate Glacier, one of the highest and most majestic mountains in southern Peru.

The final part of the excursion includes a short hike to the main viewpoint of Vinicunca, where visitors can fully admire the mountain’s extraordinary natural beauty. Along the route, it is also possible to see llamas, alpacas, and other native animals typical of the Cusco region.

This experience perfectly combines nature, culture, and adventure, making it ideal for travelers seeking a unique excursion to one of the most iconic destinations in Peru.

Cogedlos, aunque estéis acostumbrados a no usarlos.

Great Experience It was a great experience! It was really cool to see the mountain half in its original colour, the other half in snow; the contrast made it quite special. Kudos to our guide who went up to the mountain with us. It was definitely no easy task!

Caring guide Tito was very patient and caring. He did guide us well through the different ways and always looked out for the last ones (myself included). The altitude was affecting me badly and he supported me through the whole way. I highly recommend Tito as a guide for the Rainbow mountain day trip! Gracias Muchacho!

Rainbow Mountains + Red Valley is a must go! The walk to the Rainbow Mountain was a bit touch but it was worthy!!! Tito was a great tour guide who looked after all of us and explained about the area. Tito suggested to go to one of the walks around the Red Valley and it was stunniiiing!!! One of the most beautiful places I’ve seen in my life. Highly recommend to go to the Red Valley and, if you want to push yourself even further, go to the top of the mountain. It’s amazing

Recomendo o passeio!
