On this excursion to the Manu Rainforest, we will witness the amazing diversity of flora and fauna, where we will encounter the cock of the rock, the big-headed macaw, the black caiman and others. During the night, we will explore on foot in search of wildlife that comes alive in the dark, such as the nocturnal monkey or “douricouli”. Then, we will continue our exciting journey into the Manu River Reserve Zone, where we will navigate by boat and have the opportunity to observe caimans, capybaras and even jaguars.

Day 1

 We will start by picking up guests from the hotel early in the morning and head towards the Manu National Park. During the trip, we will make brief stops; for example, we will visit the ancient pre-Inca tombs known as the “Chullpas de Ninamarca”.
Then, we will cross Paucartambo and reach the Acjanaco viewpoint. We will continue past the entrance to Manu, entering the virgin cloud forest, where we will see lush vegetation and a variety of animals, including monkeys, cock of the rock, trogons, tanagers, among others.
 Finally we will arrive at the lodge where we will spend the night.

Atalaya – Machuwasi Lagoon – Jungle Hike

Day 2

We will start the day with breakfast, followed by a brief guided tour of the lodge, highlighting especially the medicinal plants and trees.
We will continue to the village of Atalaya, where we will embark and meet the local crew. From Atalaya, we will sail to our lodge, during the trip we will have the opportunity to observe various species of birds and mammals in their natural habitat.
In the afternoon, we will explore the Machuwasi lagoon, where we will have several opportunities to see caimans, the prehistoric hoatzin bird, the capybara and other species.
 Then we will make crossings in modest rafts propelled with balsam wood sticks.
Finally, we will return and spend the night in our lodge.

Parrot Clay Lick – Atalaya – Cusco

Day 3

 First we will leave at dawn to go by boat to the macaw clay lick, a site where several species of birds congregate to supplement their diet with clay.
Then the presentation begins at 5:30 a.m. with the arrival of the medium-sized parrots, followed at 7:00-7:30 a.m. by the majestic arrival of the large macaws, totaling 80 to 100 macaws and 600 or more of other species.
 Finally we will return for breakfast, prepare our belongings and head by boat to Atalaya. There we will meet our transportation that will take us back to Cusco.

Is there a lot of walking during the tour?

There are no long walks, the walks during the tours are slow as you will be surrounded by vegetation and animals so you should take your time to look around and listen well.

When is the best time to take this tour?

It is advisable to travel between April and January as there is no rain and the weather is cool and dry.

What are the boats like?

The boats that you will use during the tour are motorboats, they have wooden seats with life jackets for all passengers.

Is there electricity at the lodges?

At Casa Matsiguenka there is usually a generator available, be sure to bring enough spare batteries for cameras or flashlights for the tour, we recommend leaving your laptop or ipad in Cusco.

There is no internet access and there is no cell phone signal and only in some places you can receive calls occasionally.

Is the tour ideal for children?

The Manu Jungle Excursion is ideal for families but it is recommended not to bring children under 6 years old.

Can I swim in lakes or rivers?

For safety reasons it is forbidden to swim in the lakes and rivers.

Is the Peruvian Amazon safe?

Yes, the Peruvian Amazon is a safe tourist destination, but as in any place you should exercise caution, i.e. stay with your guide or tour group and within the lodge property.

What should I pack for the tour?

After booking the tour, you will receive a list of everything you should bring. In general, light, synthetic, breathable and quick-drying fabrics are recommended. Bring clothes with long sleeves, sun hat, long pants to protect you from insects and the sun, sunscreen, insect repellent, toiletries.

What are the temperatures like in the manu jungle?

The first day of the Manu Jungle Excursion you will be traveling through the Andes and should have a waterproof and windproof sweater or jacket.

The first night in the cloud forest, you can expect temperatures between 12 to 18°c and when you arrive in the lowland forest you should expect between 26 to 36°c, during the day and around 20 to 26°c at night.

What vaccinations are required to explore the manu jungle tours?

Before going on the Manu Jungle Excursion it is advisable to visit your doctor who will determine what you will need, depending on factors such as your health and immunization history, the areas of the country you will be visiting and the activities planned.
